[Nolug] 2.4.17 kernel upgrade on SuSE 7.3? (fwd)

Im trying to upgrade to 2.4.17 on a SuSE 7.3 system, kernel compiles ok,
but when i boot, the system pauses right after the "loading linux...."
message, the reboots.

thinking there was a problem with bzImages, i went back and tried a "make
zImage", and received an error saying the system was too big.

Am I missing something here? The hardware is Compaq Deskpro 4000 ,
Pentium133 .
