You asked about the applications.....
I forgot to include that.... Yes, that is part of the beauty.... I do
have some processes which require command line programs to be used.....
for example transcoding audio files on the fly....
mass hosting systems do not allow you to install needed command line
applications. For example coupe of applications I use madplay, and sox
(via PHP exec()). There are few others, but I do not remember as of now
what they were.
Overall, command line is a must!
