Southeastern just moved student email to Google this semester. We looked
at MS Exchange Labs also, but decided Google was a better choice.

The calendaring works great although we are not using the global address
book. And once people figure out how to use docs and it's collaboration
features, they'll stop emailing Word documents all the time haha. We use
the API's a lot, and did most of the integration in Python. The 7gb quota
is nice, and most students are thrilled they can get their email on their
iPhone now (even though they could've done it before with our POP/IMAP
servers, we didn't have a mobile web interface). We've had a few minor
issues, but no major outages (yet).

We talked to LSU about their implementation, and employed the same
technique that they and lots of other universities have done. You don't
have to use @tigers.lsu.edu, it's just faster. If you use @lsu.edu, it
just has to make a stop at the LSU MX mail server before getting to Gmail.
We're setup the same. username@g.selu.edu goes straight to Google, but
we're not telling students they MUST use @g.selu.edu.
