I agree, hardware failures are inevitable given enough usage and time. No
amount of RAID is sufficient to prevent all forms of data loss. RAID is no
substitute for regular backups.

Which is another reason I prefer RAID 10. You get redundancy via mirrored
stripes. Striping is fast, even in software forms. And backups cover you
against multiple failures or other catastrophic events.
