I think these days it is LAMP(PP)..:)
There are a ton of free shell providers out there; get one and get
started. I don't know why you say NetBSD is impractical....
http://www.freeshell.org runs their infrastructure on it. Regardless,
one of the keys here is to KNOW THY SHELL (and not c-shell, a real
shell). Force yourself to not use a GUI - and pick either vi or emacs,
never nano/pico as an editor. That pretty much rules out most popular
Linux distros for the masses (e.g., Ubuntu).
FWIW, I have learned all I ever needed to know on FreeBSD and using
Perl. I maintain several FreeBSD ports and Perl CPAN modules; get to
that point, and I'd say that you're well on your way to dominate any
*nix...I will admit, email still boggles my mind, but I've never had a
real reason to set it up.
Oh, yeah. Dump Windows on your main machine. Install a *nix - if you
emulate anything, emulate that crappy OS.
