I gave up on my Alcatel USB modem for Linux (though it still works with w2k) and got a SpeedStream 5260 ethernet modem. I also have a D-Link DI604 gateway and a D-Link DTE-530TX+ in each computer (two of them).
Do I need to use KPPP to connect, just as with dial-up? The NIC is recognized by the system, but it doesn't seem to know there's a modem there. I used the Internection Connection Manager and set up IP numbers for the system and the gateway, called the gateway and went through its setup, etc. Is connection supposed to take place by clicking "Activate"?
I can connect to the net by using a dial-up modem, but hate to be forced to use w2k for ADSL!

Subject: [Nolug] Bell South dsl connection
Boy, am I glad to be back in the Big Easy". My first task is to connect
a SuSE computer to the internet. The boss has already ordered Bell
South (I would have preferred Direct TV), and we have the Bell South USB
modem, which incidentally is not supported under Linux. I wonder if any
of the nolug Gurus can help me with a suggestion of a decent dsl modem
that works with Bell South DSL and Linux, as well as any other "caveats"
using Bell South.
Thanks,
Carlos
