It probably wouldn't damage the microwave. I frequently put potato chip bags , CDs, etc. in the microwave in my classroom to make sparks. (Their 50 Cent CD is only worth about 1 cent when I'm done!) The kids think it's really cool (hot, actually). Doesn't hurt the microwave unless you leave it on for a long time, no more than about 10 - 12 seconds.
