New, I'd go with 64bit 6.x - simply because you'll be able to address
more memory, deal with threading more effectively, and avoid a major
version transition (5.x->6.x) in the future.

All this talk about 64/32 bit is interesting, but this is 2011 and 64
bit many-cores are the standard. It's also very unlikely you'd do a
transition from 5->6; more so that you'd upgrade within the 6.x
family.
