yes, professional development, although I'm retired now. I'll put Red Hat on another computer. Question: will the skills you learn in Bash Shell in Red Hat be useful for all CLI's such as Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Debian, etc? ________________________________ From: Ron Johnson <ron.l.johnson@cox.net> To: nolug@nolug.org Sent: Tuesday, July 10, 2012 9:45 PM Subject: Re: [Nolug] playing a movie You can get Red Hat certified, but not Ubuntu. What's the purpose of these certifications?  Professional development? If so, install Centos (beer-free version of Red Hat).  It'll wipe out Ubuntu for you. A suggestion: do as much as possible from the CLI, aka "bash".  Since you've been around from 1980, you must have used MS-DOS.  bash is to MS-DOS as a thermonuclear bomb is to a firecracker.  And similarly as complicated. Buy a book or two on RH administration and bash.  I like "Learning the bash shell".  http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596009656.do  I only have the 2nd ed from 1998, but it's still useful. It'll take time.  At first your head will be swimming and you'll be doing everything from the GUI, but keep at it, and things will eventually come into focus. Google *is* your friend.  It'll just take time to figure out what questions to ask.
