Depends, I'd say. It can't be too much worse than palm's overlord monitoring on webos devices.
Which is software, afaik. Personally I don't give a damn because my n800 was 75 and this is 55 with better specs (twice the machine for less money and better choice of OS).
I'm sure IC firmware has been bugged before but this could be in any device anywhere, not just this red hate tablet.

Could they even backdoor into a home built image? Lets say you go from the ground up.... if there is a firmware-like backdoor, could it bypass and go all transformers mode on you? ie is there really any protection in a case like that or do you just dealwithit.jpg

Yes, it runs red hate probably riddled with crap, but as I said...
If you can generate an image for x86..it will run on this.
Debian, arch, gentoo (rofl), ubuntu, xp, etc so on and so forth.
Also does anyone want to snag one of these for me and pickup cash from shogun while I'm at work all day? I'd greatly appreciate it. Shredded my debit card last week. Blank check in the wild and not really any way to stop it besides locking my account down. Not to mention shogun does not offer direct deposit

That ship has sailed:

Of course, as the story points out, sometimes it is hard to tell if the
"back door" is malicious or legitimate debugging.
But my tinfoil hat is securely attached.
