7.4gb in 30 minutes is ~4.2 MB/s it's not too bad.

A 1x DVD reader, has a max transfer rate of ~1.4 Megabyte/Sec;
better readers are 4x, 8x, or 16x.

Often 8x is the best read speed, most players will provide for
DVD+R DL media.

The maximum transfer rate is an upper bound on the read speed, which
is also limited by the rotation speed, and the density of the data.
  Read speed will vary, with the kind of player, kind of media (on
players that support multiple kinds of media), and how much error
correction has to be done to get at the data, scratches, etc.
