Encryption is a way of raising the bar for criminals attempting to
spying on you to steal information. The NSA has essentially
unlimited resources to spy on you, if they want.

If your phone is encrypted, they may get a physical bug installed, or
work with your provider to get snoopware installed on your phone.

If they're spying on the world, and 1000 of the people have encrypted
conversations...
who will they think has something to hide? The use of encryption
may be treated as providing porbable cause to do whatever they want.

On the other hand.... if 1 million people are having encrypted
conversations.....
