Hi Mischa.

 

You don't have to have a Google account, but many (most?) of the things that
the phone is capable of aren't available to you unless you do.

 

I believe Amazon now has an Android store, too.

I can give you lots of answers when I get to a computer. Short answer is you
need a Google account for the Play store, unless you only install third-party
unsigned apps.

Frankly, I thought a Google account was required to set up an Android phone.
