In my experience, it's more like:

rm -rf something- *

Notice the space between the "-" and the "*" that inadvertantly crept in
there (!). It's especially bad the closer to the root dir you happen to
be when that happens.

I suppose someone could also do something like (though I personally have
never done this):

rm -rf / absolute_pathname

Again, notice the unintended space in there (!).
