Debian 3.0! (and it's derivative Libranet 2.0). I abandoned Mandrake
after RPM Hell when trying to upgrade from KDE 2.2.1 to 2.2.2.

I've never come across anything like RPM Hell under Debian. It's
package management system is just too smart.

The Debian Way not only includes apt-get (the easiest front-end to
the package manager), but a very well thought-out directory structure
on the mirrors, and release system, where there is the Current Release,
called "stable" (currently 3.0, code named Woody), "testing" (currently
code named Sarge, which at a certain time will become the new Current
Release, and transition to "stable), and finally there is "unstable",
code named "sid", where packages go while they still "break things".

Thus, you can have a:
a) Really Stable system, but whose versions are a bit behind the
   times, except for security releases
b) Pretty Stable system, but whose versions are somewhat behind
the times, except for security releases
c) Bleeding Edge system
d) a mixture of all three

Libranet, Lindows and Xandros are all derived from Debian, and
add easier install and management functionality or newbie-friendly
features like KDE (which isn't very up-to-date in standard Debian).
