[Nolug] dma question

In my quest to get dma working I recently changed motherboards to a ASUS
P4B533-E w/intel 845-E chipset(old motherboard was SIS)
Generic dma support is compiled into my kernel
now when I try to turn dma on I get the following:

plt@chon:~$ su
Password:
root@chon:/home/plt# hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 setting using_dma to 1 (on)
 HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
 using_dma = 0 (off)
root@chon:/home/plt#
 
any suggestions are appreciated in advance.
