Now I'm getting

Mar 12 13:36:16 lajeffelx01 modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module
char-major-252

in my /var/log/messages and it's repeating a lot

Mar 12 13:39:41 lajeffelx01 last message repeated 32 times

Any new ideas?

lsmod:
Module Size Used by Not tainted
loop 12888 0
ide-cd 33640 0 (autoclean)
cdrom 34176 0 (autoclean) [ide-cd]
nls_iso8859-1 3516 0 (autoclean)
autofs 13700 1 (autoclean)
eepro100 22712 2
ext3 72960 5
jbd 56752 5 [ext3]
cpqarray 23748 7
scsi_mod 110408 0

It's running on a Compaq DL360 server. I'm not sure if I need the scsi_mod
since the only SCSI on the sytesm is the drive array which should be handled
by cpqarray right? I have no clue what nls_iso8859-1 is doing since I don't
have a thing mounted with that FS.

How about rmmod loop; modprobe loop max_loop=16? No need to reboot.
