Yes try smarthost.
define(`SMART_HOST',`smtp.east.cox.net')dnl

don't forget to regenerate sendmail.cf
m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf

watch your sendmail log and maybe tcpdump when you send mail...should give
some clues.
