I won't be able to make it tonight, but I thought I'd tell you guys
about my experience with a New Orleans-based colocation provider:
Zipa.com.

If you've not heard about InterCosmos, you owe it to yourself to
check out their services. Things like DirectNic.com and Zipa.com
show that it is possible to run a nice Internet-saavy company out of
New Orleans.

Until this week, my only experience with the company was some domain
names that I bought through DirectNic.com. That, and occasionally
seeing some of their techs down at the Rue on Carondolet.

However, on Monday night, the motherboard on the server that hosts
everybody.org (and my other domains) got fried. I'm not sure what
happened, but when I tried to reboot it, I got nothing. No beeps or
prompts: nothing. I promptly freaked out.

Still, after the initial freaking, I decided there wasn't much I could
do and went to bed. I got up the next morning, called my buddy in
Indanapolis who works with me on the server to get the name of the
vendor and set about getting it replaced under warranty as well as
purchasing an additional server so we would have a backup next time.

But that would take time. They don't have 1U servers sitting around:
shopping for server hardware is more difficult than desktop hardware.
So, in the meantime, I talked about my woes with a co-worker. He
asked if I had heard of Zipa.com and I called them up.

I asked if they would have a server that I could put my SCSI drives
in and they connected me to Mike. Mike said "Sure, come on over."
So, 30 minutes after finding out about Zipa, I was in their build
room getting the my Linux drives to work with their SCSI adapters.

If you get a chance, you should ask for a tour of their facility.
They have 6000+ square feet of space for hosting with 3 OC3s (3*150
Mbs) coming into their space at 650 Poydras.

That, and they do a lot of Linux.

Mark.
