Does anyone know of a use for those old direct tv dsl gateways.

Yes, certainly.

Where?

Oh, and have you tried "fdisk /mbr" for your boot sector problem? The
worst
you could do is whack your lilo config, which you could rewrite (rerun
lilo)
once you boot off a Linux rescue floppy.
