A couple of weeks ago I caught a foot in the cord to the portable and
pulled it off the desk, resulting in breakage of the power connection inside
the case. I finally got around to trying to get inside and see if I can fix
it, but can't get the case open.
I removed the battery and all visible screws but am unable to remove
the hard disc. There is a button and a slide; as I remember from exploring
when the unit was new nearly four years ago, the button must be depressed
before the slide will move. It won't depress now, even with force, nor will
the slide move. The bottom appears to be still firmly attached in that area.
It's nice to have a portable available occasionally, but it isn't worth
much money to me. With a PIII-500 it's agonizingly slow compared with my
Athlon 1600+ desktops. If I were still in SF I would be tempted to donate it
to the Marin County School Board, which repairs old computers for school
use.
