This is one of those things that is spectacular until you have done it.
The only tough part of getting tar to do it's bit is identifying the
device. I have not done this for a long time but it works every time.
Just change to the directory you want to start from (the "." says
current) and type the command.
% tar cf /dev/whatever .
Almost all the other commands (other than for extraction) have to do
with tape movement or checking stuff out. QIC drives used to be a
problem. In the UNIX world they were not supported or recommended.
