It's Akamai's DNS servers. Google uses them because they provide
thousands of redundant servers, freeing google from having to set
them up themselves. Their customers also include Yahoo, Apple, and
Microsoft.
Paul, what happens when you try to telnet to google's http port:
$ telnet www.google.com 80
If you get back something like
Trying 64.233.161.99...
Connected to www.google.com.
Escape character is '^]'
then you can try getting their index page directly:
GET / HTTP/1.1
(be sure to hit enter twice after the 1.1). If it doesn't connect or
it hangs, though, that's where your problem is.
