I saw everyone else was talking about SSL/TLS, SMTP AUTH, and other goodies.
By "secure" do you mean encrypted, or just not open to spammers? If
encryption is not a concern then just use pop-before-smtp. It works fine.
Otherwise, do what was suggested already. :)
