It will run on Intel hardware and it will host BSD, Novell,
Win{NT,2000,2003}, and I'm sure something else also. The host OS is based on
Redhat 7.3 but they are using their own kernel. (Similar to how Novell used
to boot to DOS then take everything over after the system was up.)
The GSX and Workstation versions will run on top of Linux or Windows I
believe. ESX is built for servers.
