When grub comes up pick the kernel you want to boot, press 'e' for edit.
Find the line that starts with kernel. Press 'e' for edit, and add
'single' to the end of the kernel line. Esc (i think) then hit 'b' for
boot.

(i wrote this from memory...so might not be exactly correct)
