Just to give you an idea: I'm in a Perl Mongers group in Central PA
(yes, I know this is NOLUG. I used to live there.)
Last year, three of us went to Philly to MJD's “Higher Order Perl”
book release party. While there, they mentioned that there was an IRC
channel that no on used.
After that weekend, I started hanging out in the channel, talking to
whoever was there. Mostly, it was just the other two guys. But for
the past few months, it has been filled with 4 or semi-active people.
Conversation is a bit slow at times. An hour can go between the post
and riposte. Nevertheless, it can be lively at times. And you'll
find people in there till 1 or 2 in the morning (and, no, these aren't
students.)
So you see, IRC can work for small groups of people. Start hanging
out in there. Say “hello” when someone joins the channel. Make
people feel welcome, ask questions, begin to interact.
It won't be quick, but I think you'll see that with care and feeding
from just a few people, IRC can thrive.
