About the cheap gateway:
The specs: http://www.gateway.com/retail/ml3109.php
The wireless required ndiswrapper, but it was easy and I can provide
instructions. There's also a linux driver, but it has some problems. The
ndiswrapper solution works much better.
The sound required a patch, but I wrote a script that downloads the source
for the drivers, downloads the patch, patches the sources, compiles the
code, and installs the driver. I already had to run the script once because
of a kernel update. It works fine.
I'll try to write down exactly what steps I took to get everything working
(see http://donnieknows.com/GatewayML3109<http://donnieknows.com/GatewayMl3109>).
I'm really happy with this computer. At this moment, I'm instant messaging
with 2 people, writing this e-mail, listening to Magnatunes, on a VPN, I
have a half-dozen terminal windows open (mostly SSHing to various other
computers), and I'm editing several files in two instances of Emacs.
Everything is working flawlessly on compiz-fusion. I'm using a backlit USB
keyboard and mouse and I have a 20.1" screen hooked up to the laptop. I'll
have my 2GB RAM later today and then I'll be running VMs too. Couldn't ask
for more.
