Dear Cox @ Home customer:

Recently, you were informed that our high-speed Internet partner -
Excite @ Home - filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy protection. We
recognize that this situation may have caused you some concern about
the future of your service. Rest assured, we are taking all the
necessary steps to provide continued reliable high-speed Internet
service to our customers … now and in the future.

We are deeply committed to providing you with a quality high-speed
Internet service. For several months, we have been hard at work
creating a new Cox- managed network to better serve you. There are
many benefits to directly managing our own network, such as:

   * Easier, more streamlined customer service experience.
   * Enhanced network performance.
   * Ability to bring you the latest in cutting-edge technology and
 product features.

In the weeks ahead, we'll continue to keep you informed and share more
details of our exciting plans. For more information, please visit
 www.cox.com/moreinfo . (Click here:

thank you for being a valued Cox customer.

Sincerely,
Cox Communications

Let's hope that we have connection after friday. I would really really hate
to buy a phoneline, just for the i-net connection.

I couldn't care less, if @home mail and news go down.

If connection stays up but mail and news goes down.... heheh..... still have
to raise some noise and try not to pay full monthly fee.

Yeah, Cox would lose a *significant* revenue stream if is was
to go dark Friday. Who wants to pay $50/mo for a non-existant
service?

Dear Cox Customer,

Excitement is building for the new Cox-managed high-speed Internet
service. By completely managing our network, we can continue to bring
valued customers like you new and innovative products and services. In
short, we'll continue to provide you with the best the Internet has to
offer.

New Exciting Features
You've already experienced the benefits that our Internet service has
to offer compared to dial up -- like an Always-On Internet Connection,
blazing speeds and no need for a phone line. Here are two new
features you'll soon be enjoying:

*WebMail - anytime, anywhere access to your email from any standard
web browser with an Internet connection... wherever you are.
*More local Information - instant access to up-to-the minute
information that's close to home such as weather, traffic reports and
news from your town.

Watch for Special Delivery of an Important Package
In the coming weeks we'll be sending you a conversion kit that will
help you setup your Cox High Speed Internet service easily and in a
matter of minutes. There is no need to call at this time; please watch
for delivery of your conversion kit that will contain further details
about the new service as well as the information you need to prepare
for the conversion. For more detailed information on what will be
included in the kit, visit
http://email10.flonetwork.com/cgi-bin10/flo?y=mNMD0DnWak0GLX0cUR0BL

We hope you're looking forward to your new Cox High Speed Internet
service. We're confident you will be as excited as we are about the
upcoming enhanced Internet service!

Sincerely,

Cox Communications

I believe it is merely an unusable CD and tons of booklets, how great the CD
is.
No real usable info. A big package tho --> for them it justifies the price
increase (which naturally I don't like.)

We'll see.

Since currently the IP addresses are tied to the modem, if they
wanted to move to "real" DHCP (instead of DHCP-that-acts-like-
static), I didn't know if they had to swap out the modems.

That would be a big expense & aggravation, though.

Where's that guy from Cox? Maybe he can fill us in on how it
will affect us.

IP addresses are not tied to the modem. They're tied to the PC. @home
uses the hostname. everyone else with a brain uses the MAC ID of the
NIC. They have another CMTS (cable modem termination system) running
on different RF frequencies. Your current modem will re-aquire to
that CMTS instead of the @home one. You will have a new Ip and new
network parameters. And I would bet big $$ that your IP will no longer
be static.

I suspect our friend from Cox is working his tail off configuring and
testing the parallel server equipment they are preparing to launch.

It's not gonna be static anymore so it really doesn't matter. You'll
just pick up a new DHCP lease for that MAC id. If they make everyone
static as before, they'll tie it to the hostnames as @home did, probably
utilizing the same hostnames @home now for ease. you know that silly
CX123456 hostname they set on every machine? that's how they lock in a static
IP.

The customers who have static over here have to contact us if they
change NICs.

DHCP is just simpler on the vendor. They don't have to worry about this
stuff except in a few special cases. MAC addresses are good things to tie
to because they're globally unique.

If you stay online 24/7, your IP will change rarely if ever with standard
DHCP.

it), so I bought a new one. I had to call COX to give them my new MAC.

On a related note, I think you can connect to COX without the Hostname like
that. Just not sure about their DHCP. I always hardcode.

Cable modem MAC is important for allowing the modem to come online.
The IP however, is tied to the hostname. In more typical DHCP environments
the public IP (ie the one for your PC) is tied to your NIC MAD id and not
the hostname as @home does.

The modems themselves are provisioned off of modem MAC ID.

If you want to use DHCP with @home, you have to send a hostname string
that works on their network with your modem.

Ron,

That, or you switch computers, etc.... Either way, DHCP will re-up for a new
IP, if you're set to dynamic (which @home is not, as we have said, but will
probably exist after the Big Day that is soon to come). Under the current and
terminal setup, your modem looks at your hostname, and is none the wiser.

Ron,

I'd be willing to bet they're going to send out a CD, which should accomplish
2 things:

1. Change your email settings to reflect the new domain
(user@coxcablemodem.com or whatever), and related issues

2. Change your start page in IE to point at
http://www.coxcablemodem.com/aggravation.html like the old
http://www.excite.home.com page

..which of course you and everyone else on their system will immediately make
revert back to whatever it was before the CD arrived in the mail.

New cable modems? Unneccesary. The modems will be reprovisioned from the
office. When that happens, you'll need to make the changes on your PC if you
want your new cox email account to work, etc., using the CD, or manually.

Subject: Re: [Nolug] Fwd: Important Announcement Regarding Your Cox
Internet Service

Ron,

I'd be willing to bet they're going to send out a CD, which should
accomplish
2 things:

1. Change your email settings to reflect the new domain
(user@coxcablemodem.com or whatever), and related issues

2. Change your start page in IE to point at
http://www.coxcablemodem.com/aggravation.html like the old
http://www.excite.home.com page

..which of course you and everyone else on their system will immediately
make
revert back to whatever it was before the CD arrived in the mail.

New cable modems? Unneccesary. The modems will be reprovisioned from the

office. When that happens, you'll need to make the changes on your PC if
you
want your new cox email account to work, etc., using the CD, or
manually.
