OK, so I'm taking the initiative and actually volunteered for topics for
next month. At this point I have 2.5 topics planned:
First (at the beginning of the meeting, or maybe a little before) PGP
key signing. Look for a brief email about that, and what info you need
to send to me or the list, in a few minutes.
Second: Using Linux to communicate with MS Netmeeting. This includes the
use of GnomeMeeting on a linux box, basic use of H.323 Gatekeeper to
handle aliases and lookups, using OpenMCU as a way to tunnel H.323 thru
a NAT firewall. I've also played a little with some of the linux kernel
patches that attempt to cleanly handle NATing the connection, but never
made any of them work correctly, so I'll only touch on them. With any
luck I'll get a friend of mine up in South Carolina to be available to
demo the system, though I don't have a laptop to bring, so I'll have to
beg one off of someone else to do the demo.
Third: Internet Protocol Version 6 (IPv6) The next generation IP, with
greatly expanded address space (128 bit, versus 32 bit in IPv4),
automatic addressing and route discovery, built-in IPSec security and
encryption capabilities. (I put everyone to sleep last time I talked
about that, so I'll keep this part to a pretty high level) I intend to
talk a bit about some of the political issues related to it, what's
stopping it's widespread adoption today, some of it's advantages, a few
disadvantages, then, time permitting, get into the basics of how to use
it today either on your lan, or using IPv6 in IPv4 tunneling to get out
onto the 6bone (as it's called) and how to get a network block to work
with (I've got a /64, which means I have 64 bits of globally addressable
network space to play with. Now if only I had an outside location I
could use to hit it.)
Anyway, that's the plan, basically. If anyone has any other topics
they'd rather talk about (other than the PGP thing, I'm doing that
regardless) I'll be willing to postpone one or both of these, but I'm
intending to have them prepared in any case.
Later,
P
