I figure this might be interesting to some of you, despite being Java...

These meetings tend to be hit-or-miss, but this one has quite a bit of
potential.

ATTENTION all Java User Group members:
Meeting this week: Wednesday, June 26th, 2002
Location: 1600 Canal Street, LATC office, Suite 1430
TOPIC: "Software Development with Extreme
Programming and Test First Design"
Discussion led by: Hersh Kumar and Savita Pradeep, NOLA Computer
Services
Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Here is why you should come listen to the discussion!!!!!

a.. Are you part of a development culture where coding for a 8 month
project does not start until the 6th month of the project?
b.. where the killer integration phase comes at the end of the product
cycle, when things don't all come together so well and at nights it becomes
difficult to decide if the bites of food are more important or the bytes of
code that are needed to finish the project.
c.. where the team is grounded in detailed specs and tons of overtime?
d.. where the school of thought is "the less you understand about the
problem, the more you should design before coding"?
e.. where, often the phrase "Just do something about it!" is your only
formal requirement to write code.
f.. where the tons of documentation and diagrams to back your code makes
you think, at times, that maybe you should look into the prospect of writing
a book.
Welcome to the world of software development!!!! You are not alone.

5 years ago automaker Chrysler was faced with similar problems and to save
their project, named C3, a methodology was adopted that changed the way
smart companies develop and maintain software. It has completely transformed
everything in many companies that dared to adopt it. Ford Motor, Chrysler
and IBM are among the companies that chose it for many projects.

Extreme Programming or XP as it is called, is about casting out the demons
of traditional project planning, design, and management that has been shoved
down the pike.

XP is as much of an attitude as it is a methodology, and you are invited to
share this attitude and possibly transform yours with us. We, at NOLA have
been working with XP for years with expert trainings from the very people
who developed it.

Along with XP you will see live demonstration on how to write code test
first, also known as Test First Design as well as Refactoring, important
practices of XP; possibly comparing the same with code designed using UML.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend the meeting! We welcome friends and
associates!!
