That problem is just due to whatever terminal you are using and it's
limitation.

For the second issue, you can launch multiple "windows" within screen. so
you can ssh to multiple places within one screen "session" C-a C "creates" a
new window and C-a left and C-a right navigate within them. Just leave one
on your local machine or ssh back in to the machine you are on.

My home dir at this location is an NFS share so this is kinda not an issue
for me. The point is, there are many ways to do what you want and screen is
a really powerful tool. start working with it and see what you can do.
