For the age of the machine, I'd use a lightweight distro like Puppy or DSL.
I believe both will take OOO if you hard-drive install.

I've been trying to decide which distro to install on a crappy laptop.
It is Dell inspiron 1000. Comes with 256Mb of memory soldered in. (I
don't want to upgrade memory with soldering iron). I do not remember
which video card it has, but not too good either. A good thing with this
laptop is it's design. Simplistic looks with no bells and whistles.

Basically I'm trying to find something with latest tools and such
(Firefox, ooo, etc...), while still keeping the machine running
relatively fast. Currently I have Xubuntu 8.10 installed on it and it
seems to be running, but are there anything with not too much effort to
make the thing run better. Naturally plus would be the looks which does
not scare off typical Winblows user.
