When you plug in the device, do you have any messages in /var/log/syslog or
/var/log/messages?

Do this. unplug the scanner. type "tail -f /var/log/syslog" at the console.
plug the scanner in. Use Ctrl-C to exit the tail. cut and paste results
here.
