But Google+ and Facebook are newer technology, although Facebook is
generally the preferred one, and G+ is a bit of a dismal fail, so I
don't understand the argument in favor of G+ that "It's not FB". The
poster made the equivalent of a suggestion that you store notes using
uploaded Word documents.... but you said... "But we already have
Telephone, pen and paper, and paper calendars... why would be the
benefits of using a computer for any of that?"
Social Networking sites are a tool; and a more modern fad is for to
people to communicate with them and keep track of their interactions
nowadays through such sites.
Such sites provide some automatic functionality that mailing lists
don't, such as responding publicly in the affirmative/negative to an
event invite without a massive number of e-mails to everyone, and
sharing media rich content more efficiently.
E-mail based mailing lists are such a 90s fad.
In Principle, there would be nothing mutually exclusive with NOLUG
having both a mailing /and/ a Facebook page; the Facebook page
might attract participation from a larger audience of Linux users,
particularly novices, who aren't familiar with the concept of a LUG,
and have no clue about mailing lists..
