Randy,
It might help if we better understood your goals. It sounds like you want
to learn Linux, but do you need a functioning desktop GUI or would a
command line interface suffice? Do you have a more powerful computer with
Windows or Mac OS installed? If so, you can use Virtual Box and run Linux
inside VB. This is what I do at work (Windows 7) and at home (Mac). I run
Debian on both and this works well.
Also, with respect to installing Debian, the multi-CD (DVD) option is for
computers that don't have internet access. If the computer has network
access might want to use the Debian live CD or the network installer CD
(netinst).
