You apparently have a fast connection... go get the netinstall .iso,
tell it yes when it asks you to install a batch of other packages, then
once you have working computer, use apt-get to install whatever else you
want.
As far as scanning for defects, let your burner software do that for you
(compare what it thinks the MD5 of the disk is with what the ftp
server's md5.txt or whatever thinks it should be. If they match, you've
verified the CD enough for most folks to worry about... make the burner
software check the disk after it's burned the image.
