Thanks, Scott, Dave, Ron and -ray, for your help. After messing with the diskette and the old hard disc, the CD reader was somehow reactivated and I was able to reinstall RH 8.0 without reformatting anything but /boot and /swap. I didn't see how to reformat anything more since everything seems to be in one 40G partition (though that isn't how I remember installing it). Everything seems to be there and working at this point. I did download Libranet 2.0 to my Windows machine and will burn a CD and try it one of these days.

Hahaha... Fix the problem you're having now the hard way. I bet you'll
learn a lot about how linux works, and you'll know how to fix it next
time. Better yet, you'll know what NOT to do next time.
