Everything is unmounted and it's not setting the loop devices free.

It sounds like you ran into the 8 limit ... and automount was the only thing
letting you mount all those images ... just unmount everything, and reload
the loop module with the options someone else suggested here (actually I
wasn't aware it took that argument at load time, I always though you had to
alter loop.c in the kernel source).
