[Nolug] Backups

I finally have a decent system at home and I installed RH9 (I don't have an
internet connection right now to download a diff distro). I connected my DLT
drive and it's connected at /dev/tape --> /dev/st0. My tape drive is working
and I believe that it is doing a backup when I 'tar -czxf /dev/tape /'
however I'm not sure how to verify the data on the tape. (It's making sound
so it's writing correctly right!?) What are some normal methods of doing a
backup of the system like this?
