Have you looked into parted? It supposedly lets you resize Linux partitions. I saw something about it recently, and just did a 'find' on it and found it's in /sbin in my RH8. See man parted.

The file system is ext-3. All the hard disk space is currently used. I was
planning on resizing one of the partitions to a smaller size, then make the
full partition bigger.
