I have a book called "Linux Essential Reference"
It's Copyright 2000, but it gives each command (well most commands)
each argument (well most) and an example of the command.
They're listed in alphabetical order.

There is probably a newer version out there, but I found
this one on Amazon:
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0735708525/104-6233961-8911112?vi=glance

Also, I have a book called "Hip Pocket Guide to Unix" It has commands,
options, examples but is not nearly as complete as the book above.

Again you could probably get newer versions of each of these books,
but here is the ISBN's respectively.

ISBN: 0-7357-0852-5
ISBN: 0-7645-3226-X

I'm not much of a book reader, although I have many books, I don't
get much from them. What I do use a lot is
command --help

ie. ls --help

Most commands have fairly extensive and useful help explanations.

Learn to use that and you'll be well on your way to command knowledgeable!

Good Luck.

I need to learn more commands – I’m sick of GUIs and realize from growing up on Windoz that if I’m going to get to a guru level with Linux then I’m going to have to get my head around command line better. Finding commands is not so much the problem as coming up with useful exercises to apply the commands with checks to see if I did what I was trying to do. So I guess what I’m looking for is a great workbook with some practical exercises and checks so I can get this part of Linux locked down a little more. I’m not afraid of command line at all and really understand it’s the only way to be more than a luser at it.
