I know this may sound stupid, but have the directory rights changed?
Do you and/or the mail server still have access rights to the directory?
I had an FTP problem where my group permissions got fouled up and it reset
directory permissions.

No, it's the Debian ipop3, which is uw-pop3d

output going to /var/log/mail.log & /var/log/syslog.

$ telnet haggis pop3

It's like suddenly the popd isn't looking in at /var/mail/me
anymore.

The frustrating/confusing thing is that other users in /var/mail
can still get their mail.

# dir /var/mail/me
-rw-rw---- 1 me mail 625707 Oct 28 11:34 /var/mail/me

Looked in them, and it just confirms what I said earlier:
suddenly it stopped seeing /var/mail/me.
