Yeah, it's up. I can connect as the UNIX user postfix runs as
(nobody) to the mysql server as the mysql user (scoop) using the
socket (/var/lib....).

No, the problem appears to be that this box was installed using
binaries from Debian Unstable, which is pretty much a hit-or-miss
affair.

I'm trying downgraded binaries from stable instead.
