I know what i'm about to say isn't much help, but...

Can you connect to mysql using any other application (perl, or php, etc.)? I
had this error once or twice, and it ended up being a config error, IIRC.
Unfortunately, I don't remember the details :-/ However, you can determine
whether mysql is actually working correctly or not by accessing it with some
other agent.

I hope you get it working soon...
