to look?

This sounds awfully strange, mouse problems of that nature are usually due to
X misconfiguration. Take a look at your ~/.xsession-errors.

Just symlink "linux" to the sources of your running kernel, which will be
named something like "kernel-source-2.4.23". If you installed woody and
didn't explicitly start the installer in 2.4, you are probably using 2.2, so
you might want to install a newer kernel

"apt-cache search kernel-image" will do, and should give you a pretty good
selection of 2.4 kernels. Then if you need the sources install the
corresponding source package as well.

There are backports to woody of most things you may want on http://
www.backports.org, just starting out I would reccomend using backports over
using sid, besides, sarge is going stable in a few months and will be very up
to date.
