Hmmm. What if you try kernel-image-2.4.23-1-386, and see if you
still get the freezes?
Your problem #2 seems like a config problem, or maybe, you need
to delete /lib/modules/2.4.24 once you are running .23, and do
a "make clean" on /usr/src/kernel-source-2.4.24.
Can't help you with #3. Maybe the Debian-user list could.
