Off the wall thought...
I was having similar problems with my FTP server.
My server was wanting a double reverse lookup to validate incoming
connections.
This was too long ago to remember what the resolution was, but it may
explain the connection to some sites but not others.
Hopefully this will jog somebody in the right direction.
Could this be a web server or firewall blocking rule?
Where the forward and reverse lookups don't match???
