I belive it has to do with the X client, you may want to google a little
more on the X client/server protocols. I know that there used to be a hack
for the X client port, but I'm sure that issue has been resolved.

Subject: [Nolug] X11 port open?
On my two Suse9.0 installs I've noticed
that the x11 TCP port (6000) is listening,
but on my brand new fresh install of
Fedora this port is not listening.
Does anyone have any idea how to turn this
off in Suse? Does it pose a threat?
Actually. I had googled before I asked this
question and didn't really find an answer, then
I googled some more, refined my search and
found a satisfactory answer.
Which is, edit the file:
/etc/opt/kde3/share/config/kdm/Xservers
add -nolisten tcp to the line that says:
:0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X :0 vt07 -nolisten tcp
What I don't understand is why would I want that
port open?
I guess I would need it open to do X11 forwarding?
Ok so I just tested that and no, you don't need
port 6000 to do X11 forwarding. So just what
is port 6000 for? and why do some distro's ship
with the port open?
