Next week, Thursday the 20th at 7:30 PM to be exact, we will be meeting at
UNO. I will be recapping some of the recent security issues and events that
we've heard about recently. We will in all likelihood order pizza from a
local shop, so don't let your empty stomach stop you from showing up.
As an example of what I'll be talking about, today we saw on
http://slashdot.org that Gmail (google's email portal) had a nasty bug that
allowed anyone to send a specially-crafted email to their account, and data
from other people's accounts would appear in the email. In some instances,
other users' account info, including passwords, was visible. What essentially
happened was that Gmail's server didn't adequately check the syntax of email
addresses, which allowed for other data residing in the server's memory to be
pasted into the attacking email.
As usual, I will rant extensively about the need for keeping our servers and
desktops patched, and that we should follow basic security precautions when
surfing the net, etc.. Hopefully I won't get too carried away this time :-)
Anyhow, network security is everyone's business, and next week's meeting is a
good opportunity to make ourselves more aware of the security issues that we
face today.
